Hailed as “Ironman 70.3 Triathlete of the Year” for her efforts in 2009 by Triathlete Magazine, one may never believe Magali Tisseyre has only been in the sport for five years. And although her petite size may fool a few at the start of a race, this TYR athlete quickly claims respect and admiration by the finish.

Tisseyre completed her 2009 season with a third place finish at the 2009 Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, Florida to cap off what was a break-out year for the rising star. Prior to her championship finish, she had a batch of successful races that contributed to her season finale. Tisseyre’s highlight of the season came when she won her first 70.3 distance race at Ironman 70.3 Boise-shaving 24 minutes off her previous year’s performance by clocking a 4:12:29 24. Along with this finish, Tisseyre placed second at Ironman 70.3 Calgary, and third at Ironman 70.3 Timberman.

The 27-year-old Canadian Tisseyre did not enter the world of triathlon at a young age – getting involved in many different activities that helped her grow physically and intellectually. A violinist until age 17 and an aspiring actress for a short while, she was never just distinguished by her athleticism. She did, however, compete in extreme sports such as skiing and snowboarding. She races to this day with the souvenir of her former sporting days-a metal plate in her tibia from a boarder cross race.

While attending university, Tisseyre got involved with the club triathlon team. She tried her first race, and was instantly hooked on the adrenaline rush it gave her as well as the fun she had competing. It was obvious that she had an innate talent for the sport when in her first year racing she became the 2004 Canadian University Champion.

Tisseyre continued to compete in triathlons on the amateur level, and also began to thrive in duathlons. In 2005 she became the 20-24 age-group World Duathlon Champion, giving her a taste of success on an international scale. After the victory she continued to compete at both duathlon and triathlon events under an amateur status.

Now finished with her master’s degree in Biomechanics, Tisseyre trains with Lance Watson and LifeSport in Victoria. It is there that she is surrounded by a full-time team and continues to keep her sight on her athletic aspirations-including an Ironman World Championship in the near future.

Q: What do you look to improve?

A: My swimming, definitely. It is the sport in which I have the most place for improvement as I started swimming when I started triathlon 5 years ago. I have come from far but swimming is the sport that is improving the most. My short term objective is to be able to come first out of the water in most 70.3’s.

Q: What distinguishes you amongst your competitors?

A: I think I have a particular background: I was a violinist until I was 17 and also always had a passion for extreme sports: I was a competitive skier and snowboarder and enjoyed other sports such as motocross, windsurfing, waterskiing (I race with a metal plate in the tibia, souvenir from a broken leg in a boarder cross race!). Judging from the nickname my team mates gave me- Mighty Mouse- I think that it is surprising to some people that I am small yet strong on the bike.

Q: What is TYR to you?

A: To me, TYR is an ambitious company which creates top of the line swim and triathlon apparel and equiptment and stands out for it’s philosophy and involvement in the world of triathlon. I think that TYR will become a close partner and is going to become an influential company in my career.

Q: Favorite Triathlon Race & Why:

A: The Hawaii Ironman, because it is my dream and ultimate goal!

Q: How did you get started in the sport?

A: I was a violinist for most of my life. I just got into triathlon when I heard about the college triathlon team. I was curious and I got hooked!

Q: What part of the race is your favorite: swim, bike or run?

A: I really like all three. Which ever one goes better on a given day…that usually will make me like it more!

Q: What is your favorite TYR triathlon product?

A: My race suit, the Tracer Light.  My speedsuit (Sayonara) as well.

Q: Best Triathlon Memory:

A: Boise 70.3, 2009. My first 70.3 win, on my favorite course, a perfect day, with all my friends there!

Q: How do you know you are ready to race?

A: When I am happy and relaxed on race morning. When I just can’t wait to race, when race morning feels like the start of a big show.

Q: What is your favorite TYR swimsuit and why?

A: Definitely the diamondback bathing suits. The feel and the look.

Q: What is your favorite book?

A: A French book: Le Zebre (Alexandre Jardin)(Favorite author)

Q: What type of listen do you like?

A: My favorite music is progressive trance. DJ’s like Tiesto, Sasha, Paul Van Dyke.

Q: What will you do after your triathlon career?

A: I am finishing a master’s degree in Biomechanics, I have specialized in running. I hope to put this into application after triathlon. Maybe get involved in product development for a bike, run, or swim-oriented company.

Q: What product do you prefer to compete in? Why?

A: I love the Tracer Light, it is comfortable to race in, fast for non-wetsuit swims, very stylish too. If I am competing in a race in which the temperature will be very high, I also like to wear my favorite two piece bathing suit with the Splice Singlet on top. To me, it is the most comfortable way to race in hot conditions.

Q: Biggest influence in your life?

A: My family. My mom, particularly.

Q: Biggest influence in the sport?

A: My coach, my team.

Q: Favorite Athlete?

A: Linsey Corbin.

Q: What goggles do you prefer? What do you like about them?

A: I have a small face and find it hard to find the right goggles. I find that the socket rocket is a competitive goggle that adjusts well to different faces and it works wonders for me.

Q: Why do you do triathlons? Why do you compete?

A: I want to live my passion. Triathlon satisfies all aspects of me. I am a very happy girl.
