Alexander & Wellington Win Ironman World Championship; Alexander Sets New Course Record

Huntington Beach, CA- October 8, 2011- TYR athletes Craig Alexander and Chrissie Wellington captured the Ironman World Championship male and female titles in times of 8:03:56 and 8:55:08, respectively.  Alexander’s time set a new course record and crowns him Ironman champion for the third time in his career (previous titles were in 2008 and 2009).  Wellington clinched her fourth World Championship title with a superb 2:52:41 marathon run.

The men’s race began with TYR’s Andy Potts exiting the water in TYR’s Torque Pro Swimskin with a time of 49:44, the fastest of the day.  TYR’s Pete Jacobs was not far behind with a swim split of 51:38.  Fellow Aussie Alexander exited the water with a solid 51:56 split in his TYR Torque.

Gaining valuable time on the bike, Alexander pedaled his way into the lead with a time of 4:24:05.  Alexander did not let up at all on the run, as Aussie Pete Jacobs was close on his feet. Alexander was able to seize the title with a 2:44:02 marathon.  Alexander’s final course record time of 8:03:56 broke the previous record by twelve seconds.  Jacobs finished an impressive second with the fastest marathon time of the day, 2:42:29.

TYR’s Tom Lowe raced to an 11th place finish in TYR’s Carbon Race Kit with a time of 8:29:02.  Also wearing TYR Carbon, Andy Potts was the highest American male finisher with a final time of 8:38:36.

On the women’s side, TYR’s Amanda Stevens was first out of the water in TYR’s Torque Swimskin with a time of 51:54.  Not far behind were TYR athletes Julie Dibens, Mirinda Carfrae, and Chrissie Wellington who exited in 51:58, 57:17, and 1:01:03, respectively.

Dibens lead the entire bike with a new course record of 4:44:14 but was forced to drop out on the run with an injury.  Biking and running TYR’s custom red Carbon race kit, Wellington’s impressive bike (4:56:13) and run (2:52:41) splits helped her edge 2010 World Champion Mirinda Carfrae.  Carfrae finished a close second with a time of 8:57:57 and the fastest marathon of the day (2:52:09).

Alexander and Wellington now own seven Ironman World Championship titles between them.  Wellington’s victory was especially exceptional after having endured a bike crash just twelve days before the World Championship.
