Huntington Beach, Calif. – February 16, 2010- TYR announces the signing of world record holder and U.S. National Team member Nick Thoman to their roster of world-class athletes that include Matt Grevers, Ariana Kukors, and Amanda Weir. With the multi-year agreement, Thoman will compete and train in all TYR swimsuits, including the new Tracer High-Performance Line, as well as swim and lifestyle apparel and accessories.

“The U.S. has been loaded with the world’s best backstrokers for decades, and Nick is next,” said TYR’s Team Sales and Promotions Director Matt Zimmer. “His talent has been evident for a while, but being able to beat the best on the international level is never easy. He is ready for his name to be amongst the best, and TYR will support him every step of the way.”

Thoman is currently one of the fastest backstrokers in the world after recently breaking the 100m short course backstroke world record while representing Team USA at December 2009’s “Duel in the Pool.” Clocking a 48.94 while leading off the men’s 4×100m individual medley relay, his performance aided in the relay team breaking the event’s world record as well. Thoman continues to train in Charlotte, N.C., in hopes of an Olympic berth in 2012 while partnered with TYR.

“I am very excited to sign with TYR,” Thoman shared. “The company is very generous and supportive of their athletes and I anticipate having a lot of success in their products.”

TYR will look to draw on Thoman’s talent and input while developing new technical products. In addition, the company will provide him with a variety of suits from the new Tracer High-Performance Line – including the Tracer Light, Tracer B-Series, and Tracer C-Series- for both domestic and international competitions.

“Nick’s excited to be performing in the Tracer C-Series jammer, and we’re honored that he chose TYR as his partner for his 2012 efforts,” Zimmer added.

Aside from the overall meet highlight, it was TYR’s Ariana Kukors who took her first gold of the long weekend in the 200y Individual Medley Monday evening, shattering the previous meet record in the process.

Grevers, the 2008 Olympic silver medalist in the 100m backstroke, started in lane four for the last race of his meet line-up- the 100y backstroke. Registering a time of 47.42 in the morning’s preliminaries, he turned up the momentum at night to lead the heat and touch in 45.97. With the win, Grevers scored a total of 26 points in the USA Swimming Grand Prix series.

The world record holder in the 200m Individual Medley, Kukors found herself in a tight race at the start of the finals of the 200y Individual Medley. Fresh off a third place finish in the 100y breaststroke (1:02.25), the finals of the race featured three Olympians.

A close race the entire length, Kukors, wearing the Tracer Light Shortjohn, turned second at the 150y and turned on the speed to split 27.1 on the freestyle leg and take the win. Touching at 1:55.05, she lowered the previous meet record by nearly two seconds.

With the conclusion of the meet, Grevers remains tied for second for overall points in the Grand Prix Series. The next series stop begins February 12th in Columbia, Mo. at the 2010 Missouri Grand Prix. Winning the 200y and 50y freestyle, his gold medal count at the meet extends to four.

“I am enjoying getting out and racing,” said 24-year-old Grevers. “Coming out of the 200 and having a strong 50 was a great way to end the evening.”

The 200y freestyle was a close race up until the finish. Splitting 46.53 at the hundred, Grevers was only .02 ahead of second. Staying slightly ahead of the heat, he had a late surge in the back 50y to split 24.15 and solidify the win. Clocking in at 1:34.98, he dropped nearly four seconds from the morning’s preliminary races.

Four events later, Grevers was back on the block for the highly anticipated 50y freestyle to determine the fastest male of the meet. The dash ended with Grevers’ touch-a 19.58 that beat second by less than .2 seconds.

With his fourth win of the meet, Grevers’ night ended and focus now falls on the last night of finals, scheduled for 4 p.m. PST.

On the third and final day of the 2009 Short Course National Championships held in Federal Way, Wash. on Saturday, December 5th, Amanda Weir took the 100y freestyle finals with a time of 47:84 to defend her national title. With the conclusion of the night’s finals, TYR-Sponsored athletes captured a total of five national titles.

The race came down to four Olympians vying for the gold in the sprint event-one being 2004 Olympian Weir. At the first fifty, she hit the wall at 23.31 to tie for third and immediately took charge on the next half of the race. Coming into the final wall, it was her swift touch that solidified her win- clocking in only two one-hundredths of a second ahead of the silver medalist in 47.84.

With Weir’s win, she defended her second national title of the meet- winning the 50y freestyle two evenings before in 21.90.

“I came into this meet with the goal of defending my titles in both the sprints so I’m pretty happy with the outcome,” Weir exclaimed after the finals. “Also, I wanted to gear up for the Duel in the Pool in a couple of weeks and head there on a good note-ready to swim fast”

Other first-place finishes for TYR athletes during the meet included Ariana Kukors in the 200y individual medley, Robert Margalis in the 400y individual medley, and Matt Grevers in the 100y butterfly.

After clocking a lifetime best 52.82 in the 100m backstroke Monday, July 27th at the 2009 FINA World Championship, TYR-Sponsored Matt Grevers will advance to the championship final heat scheduled to compete tomorrow evening.

Coming off a gold-medal victory as a member of the men’s 4×100m freestyle relay the night before, Grevers had a slower start in the mornings preliminary round, swimming a 54:04. The time placed him 16th entering the semi-finals during this evening’s competition. With the performance, he had much to prove to make it into the top eight. Splitting a 25.84 in the first 50m, he battled the field to touch the wall 4th in his heat. He jumped 11 spots from the morning’s race to finish fifth 5th overall. The next race will be for a spot on the podium.

“I’m going to win this race,” Grevers simply stated after dropping considerable time from one session to the next. As the only U.S. swimmer advancing to the finals, he will look to represent the stars and stripes amongst the competitive finalists.

On the women’s side, U.S. head women’s coach and TYR’s own Sean Hutchison celebrated as his KING Aquatics swimmer rewrote the women’s world record in the 200m Individual Medley with an incredible 2:06.15. Before the start of the championships, the previous world record was over two seconds slower at a 2:08.45. The race was the highlight of the night, speaking to the talent that Hutchison is guiding on team USA.

“Sean continues to show why he is not only THE coach of the future, but the coach of NOW,” said TYR’s Promotions Director Matt Zimmer. “I am continuously taken back by the accomplishments he just tutored.”

Be sure to return to TYR.com for the results of the men’s 100m backstroke after the conclusion of Tuesday’s finals, as well as throughout the entire competition scheduled to continue through August 2nd.

With the conclusion of the 2009 USA Swimming ConocoPhillips National Championships and World Championship Trials, TYR congratulates Mary DeScenza, Matt Grevers, and Amanda Weir for their strong performances throughout the past week claiming individual and relay spots on the US World Championship team headed to Rome, Italy for the championships scheduled to begin July 22nd.

Competing from July 7th to July 11th, the three sponsored athletes had tremendous success from the start and as a result will race in a total 10 combined events at the championships.

Three-time 2008 Olympic medalist Grevers will represent the US in the men’s 100m backstroke, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 400m medley relay, and 400m freestyle relay. At the national championships, he had two personal best times, most notably in the 100m freestyle. Wearing the new TYR Tracer Sayonara, Grevers came out of lane eight in the finals to secure a spot on the 400m freestyle relay team by touching the wall in 48.27, capturing fourth.

Coming off of an impressive year of swimming that included being named the 2008-2009 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series winner, DeScenza added yet another achievement, qualifying to compete in the stars and stripes in Rome swimming the women’s 200m butterfly. Wearing the TYR Tracer Rise, she went a lifetime best by using her signature back-end speed to come from behind to clinch a second place finish in 2:07.13.

“I am so excited I am going to Rome,” DeScenza exclaimed. “It has been a really hard week and I am happy I was able to come out on top!”

Weir is no stranger to competing for the U.S. at the World Championships. The two-time Olympic medalist made her first appearance on the World Championship team in 2005 when she took away two medals as a relay member. At the 2007 World Championships, she earned three medals with team USA, setting an American record as a member of the 400m freestyle relay team.

At this past week’s national championships, Weir wore the new Tracer A7 and had stand-out results. With a lifetime best time by dipping below the 25 second barrier in the 50m freestyle, she secured her first individual spot on the championship team. In the 100m freestyle, she came from behind on the back half and claimed second-adding another event to her meet line-up. In total, she will represent the US in the women’s 50m and 100m freestyle as well as the 400m freestyle relay and 400m individual medley relay.

“I have never done that much swimming at worlds before so it should be fun,” she said. “I’m really excited for a chance to prove myself again and get back up there on top.”

In addition to the three athletes representing TYR at the championships, swim coaches Bill Rose of the Mission Viejo Nadadores, Sean Hutchison of King Aquatics club, and diving coach Jeff Huber of Indiana University will guide team USA as members of the coaching staff.

Hutchison will bring extensive experience on the coaching level after most recently serving as assistant women’s coach for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team in Rome. His trip to Rome will be his second time serving on the World Championship coaching staff, after previously being named assistant coach of the 2007 team.

Not new to coaching at international competitions, Rose has been a USA coach for multiple World University Games, Pan American Games, and USA Open Water teams. He successfully placed two athletes on this year’s world championship team.

“I feel absolutely great about being asked to coach for the USA, “said Rose. “The whole key is any time I can be there representing the United States and taking in that kind of atmosphere there is nothing better. That’s the gold medal coaches get. We don’t get anything else. We get that and I win.”

Having placed one of his divers on every Olympic team since 1992, Huber is recognized globally for his coaching talent. He has been the USA diving coach for the past three Olympic Games, and will use his expertise to guide the US championship team against the world’s best divers. One of his own Indiana University divers will compete for the team in Rome.

Be sure to check back to TYR.com throughout the entire 2009 World Championships to follow Grever’s, DeScenza’s, and Weir’s performances as they go for gold in Rome. Receive updates quickly by adding your email address to the TYR mailing list provided on the top of this email and on the site’s homepage.

The 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and World Championship Team Trials in Indianapolis, IN kept getting better for TYR swimmers and coaches each night, ending Saturday evening on a high note. Amanda Weir added yet another individual race to her list for the championships in Rome, Italy, while coach Bill Rose of the Mission Viejo Nadadores was selected by USA Swimming to join the team’s coaching staff.

In the finals of the women’s 100m freestyle, Weir was introduced to the crowded stands as the championship record holder in the event. When the start went off, Weir was out to prove she was still one of the fastest females in the event.

Flipping at the 50m mark,Weir was sixth splitting a 26.27. Despite the deficit, she came from behind to have the fastest back-end leg (27.76) to touch second in 54.03.

Weir recognized the lack of speed against the competitive field in the first half of the race, and will look to show her true talent in Rome.

“I know I can do a lot better in there in the hundred,” Weir shared. “I was a bit rocky tonight, and I definitely think I have a lot of room for improvement which is a good thing.”

With the completion of tonight’s race, Weir will compete in the 50m and 100m freestyle as well as the 400m freestyle relay and 400m medley relay at the championships.

“I have never done that much swimming at worlds before so it should be fun,” she said ”I am really excited for a chance to prove myself again and get back up there on top.”

The other highlight of the evening was the announcement of adding TYR’s coach Rose to the 2009 U.S. World Championship coaching staff. Not new to coaching at international competitions, he has been a USA coach for multiple World University Games, Pan American Games, and USA Open Water teams.

“I feel absolutely great about being asked to coach for the USA, “said Rose. “The whole key is any time I can be there representing the United States and taking in that kind of atmosphere there is nothing better. That’s the gold medal coaches get. We don’t get anything else. We get that and I win.”

Earlier in the day during the preliminaries, TYR’s Matt Grevers had a personal best time in the men’s 200m backstroke wearing the new Tracer Sayonara. Dropping over two seconds and touching in at 1:57.04, he opted to scratch for the finals of the race. Already scheduled to swim the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 400m freestyle relay, and 400m medley relay, Grevers felt there were already enough events to focus on in Rome.

With the conclusion of the national championships, both TYR swimmers and coaches will continue to prepare for competition at the world championships beginning on July 22nd. Make sure to visit TYR.com for all up-to-date recaps on their performances.

The IUPUI pool in Indianapolis, IN set the stage Friday evening for TYR swimmers to shine at the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and World Championship Trials. Matt Grevers and Mary DeScenza both qualified for the U.S. team to compete at the championships in Rome, Italy beginning on July 22nd. TYR’s coach Kim Brackin of University of Texas also placed a swimmer on the roster, adding to the night’s overall success.

In the final of the men’s 100m freestyle, Grevers arrived from the ready room dressed in TYR’s
new Tracer Sayonara™. After placing eighth in the preliminaries in a 49.01, he stepped on the blocks of lane eight ready to be the heat’s outside smoke. Going out in a blazing 22.89-the fastest in the field- he did just that.

“I knew I had to race with nothing to lose. So I did, “said Grevers. “I went out fast trying on the new Sayonara and it worked out great. I felt so much better tonight in the water.”

Grevers held on the second fifty to place fourth overall, touching in a lifetime best 48.27. The time positioned him on the men’s 400m freestyle relay in Rome, Italy at the World Championships- the same event he is a 2008 Olympic gold medalist in.

“I wanted that so bad tonight,” Grevers said of making the relay team. “Being a part of the relay team in Beijing was incredible and I knew I wanted to be a part of that again. This is awesome.”

Immediately following Grever’s performance, DeScenza entered the final heat of the women’s 200m butterfly seated third. Already dropping half a second three nights before in the 100m butterfly (57.77) where she placed fourth, it would take another personal best to make the team.

DeScenza entered the turn at the 150m in third place, and used her back end speed to close in on the competition, splitting 33.21 on the last 50m. The effort resulted in the fastest time of DeScenza’s career- 2:07.13. Touching second, she reached her goal of making the U.S. roster for the championships.

“I am so excited I am going to Rome,” DeScenza exclaimed. “I just wanted to swim my own race and not worry about what was going on around me. It has been a really hard week and I am happy I was able to come out on top!”

Also excited and relieved after the race was University of Texas’ head womens coach Brackin, who watched as her swimmer finished first, also securing a spot on the World Championship team roster.

“It felt great to watch her make the team,” Brackin said. “She deserves to be in Rome. She works hard and is a talented kid. Right now I feel excitement, relief, and pride for her.”

With only one more day left at the championships, sign on to TYR.com to share in the enthusiasm of TYR’s swimmers and coaches as they look to add more swims to their trip in Rome.
