TYR’s Grevers Wins Double Gold on Night Two at Southern California Grand Prix

Long Beach, Calif.-January 17, 2010- TYR-sponsored Matt Grevers took home two gold medals Saturday night on the second day of competition at the 2010 Southern California Grand Prix in Long Beach, Calif. Grevers won gold in both the men’s 100y freestyle and 200y backstroke. TYR’s William Copeland came in a close second in the men’s 100y freestyle.

Grevers started his gold medal performances of the night by lowering his preliminary time of 43.87 in the 100y freestyle to a 43.06, to touch out Copeland by .24 seconds. Second at the fifty with a split of 20.51, it was his back-end speed that solidified the win, splitting .22 faster than Copeland on the final fifty.

“I went out tonight to race,” the 6’8” Grevers shared. “I had some great competition and I followed through on the second half into the finish and it paid off.”

The 2008 Olympic silver medallist backstroker used momentum from his first win of the evening to take another gold in 200y backstroke. Dropping nearly six seconds from the morning swim to finish in 1:40.20, he successfully hit the wall .74 ahead of second.

TYR Signs USA Standout Sarah Haskins

Huntington Beach, CA- January 6th, 2009- Working to promote and support the best athletes in the sport of triathlon, TYR is proud to announce a multi-year partnership with USA standout Sarah Haskins. An Olympian and reigning Toyota Series Champion, she is a proven performer who will bring experience and enthusiasm to TYR’s growing team of professional triathletes.

“We at TYR are very pleased to welcome Sarah to our team of athletes,” said TYR National Manager of Sales and Multisport. “We feel Sarah is a great addition and we look forward to working with her to help her accomplish her triathlon goals.”

Spending the majority of her time training in the high altitude of Colorado Springs, CO, 28-year-old Haskin has steadily added a multitude of accolades to her resume. Placing in the top two at four of the 2009 Lifetime Fitness Triathlon Series to take the overall title, she now looks ahead to representing TYR in her flourishing career.

“Having been a professional athlete for five years now, I know how important it is to be working with a company who supports their athletes to race at their best,” Haskins shared. “TYR is a title sponsor of many major triathlons around the country, including the Lifetime Fitness: Race to the Toyota Cup Series. I have raced in this series for the past two years and look forward to personally representing TYR while racing in this series and defending my title for 2010.”

A current USAT National Team Member, Haskins has worn the red, white, and blue with pride. In 2008, she competed for USA at the Beijing Olympics, finishing 11th overall. In addition, she has secured a USAT Elite National Championship, as well as a silver medalist at the 2008 ITU World Championships.

Haskins has partnered with TYR to compete in the company’s full line of triathlon apparel, swimwear, accessories, and the debut wetsuit scheduled to hit the market February 25th, the Hurricane.

Weir Secures Spot on World Championship Team

On day three of the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and World Championship Trials, TYR’s Amanda Weir exploded off the block and never slowed down in the finals of the women’s 50m freestyle, placing second by a hundredth of a second at 24.77 to add her name to the U.S. World Championship Team roster.

Weir arrived at the IUPUI pool in Indianapolis, IN, for Thursday’s finals ready to take on the country’s fastest talent on the women’s side after dipping below the 25 second barrier in prelims, entering finals in third place.

“I was so fired up after this morning. I had never been under 25 so I just wanted to get here and do it,” Weir said.

The two-time Olympic medalist Weir will compete in Rome, Italy with experience at the world championship level already under her belt. Her first appearance on the World Championship team came in 2005 when she took away two medals as a relay member. At the 2007 World Championships, she earned three medals with team USA, setting an American record as a member of the 400m freestyle relay team.

Despite her past successes, tonight’s performance is a feat Weir has been looking to accomplish.

“I have been working so hard this summer and have had a lot of fun. My mindset is to go out there and have fun and race,” said Weir. “When I got here for finals, all I wanted to do was get on this team.”

With the 50m freestyle behind her, Weir will now focus on the 100m freestyle race scheduled for Saturday. She is a former American record holder in the event.
