Huntington Beach, Calif. – March 14, 2010 – TYR professional triathlete Julie Dibens celebrated a first place finish at the inaugural Abu Dhabi International Triathlon on Saturday, March 13th while TYR’s Sarah Haskins kicked off the 2010 North American triathlon season with a victory at the 2010 Miami International Triathlon presented by TYR on Sunday, March 14th.

Dibens set the tone for TYR athletes over the weekend with the big win at Abu Dhabi amongst 800 athletes representing 30 countries. The recent Ironman 70.3 World Champion relied on her bike strength to solidify her win with the fastest split of the female field despite a flat tire. Finishing the 200km bike with a four minute lead at the start of the run, she continued to length the lead on the run to clock a 7:08:25 overall.

Also racing on the course with Dibens was TYR’s Fraser Cartmell who exited the 3K swim first wearing TYR’s Sayonara Swimskin. Remaining up with the top men professionals, the British pro crossed the finish fourth in 6:36:12.

2008 Olympian Haskins once again demonstrated her dominance in the Olympic-distance while in Miami, Fla. with a finishing time of 1:58:16. Swimming in the Sayonara and racing the bike and run in the Fusion 2 Shortjohn, it was her last leg that solidified the win. The only female to average sub six-minute pace, she split 36:25 on the 10km run.

Huntington Beach, Calif. – January 29, 2010 – TYR continues to expand its elite roster of world-class athletes with the signing of triathlon “King of Swim” John Flanagan. The Hawaii native competed in the company’s Sayonara swimskin when leading out of the water at the 2009 Ironman World Championships. He will continue to race in TYR’s line of swimskins, apparel, and accessories, as well as the newest addition to the Triathlon line, the Hurricane wetsuit.

“All of us at TYR are thrilled to have John Flanagan as one of our flagship athletes,” said TYR Triathlon Sales and Promotions Director Ryan Dolan. “John has been a long time member of the TYR family. He coaches TYR teams and has represented the company in national and international open water swimming events. We look forward to him racing in our new premier wetsuit, the Hurricane.”

Flanagan proved his swimming strength at many national and international triathlon races in the past year. In addition to his 47:42 split at the world championships during the 2.4-mile swim leg, he set the swim course record at the 2009 Ironman Louisville race, averaging roughly 1:10 per 100 meters to clock in at 44:45. His success is rooted in over a decade of competitive swimming including a 2001 national title, an NCAA team title for Auburn University’s Men’s Swimming and Diving team, and four years as a Team USA swim member.

“I use TYR products everyday for either training or racing,” said Flanagan. “The Sayonara swimskin is the fastest suit I have ever swam in and helps me get out to a good start in my races. I also look forward to competing in cold water races this year so I can use the new Hurricane wetsuit!”

Flanagan joins the world’s greatest triathletes on Team TYR including Chrissie Wellington, Andy Potts, Sarah Haskins, and Julie Dibens.

“TYR is committed to the success of it’s athletes, and I want to continue to be a part of it,” Flanagan concluded.

TYR products are distributed through sporting good retailers, swim and triathlon specialty stories, swim team dealers, and online at www.TYR.com.

The 2009 Ironman World Championships were owned by the reigning champion Chrissie Wellington, who secured her third consecutive title with a new course record of 8:54:03, erasing the previous mark set 17 years ago Saturday, October 10th in Kona, Hawaii.

“I never thought that I would come here and break the record,” said Wellington immediately after finishing the race. “This was definitely the hardest Ironman I have ever done. I had to dig deep. I am so proud of what I achieved today. Thank you so much, and I hope I can continue to be a champion you can always be proud of.”

Wellington entered the race with the goal of going faster than ever before. The prior year, she won the race in 9:06:23 and was confident that this year would be something special. When asked which portions of her race she was looking to go faster, she boldly replied, “all of them-the swim, the bike, the run.” That was the confidence that would fuel her into the morning’s start.

The race began at 6:46am, with the temperature already climbing through the 80s and a humidity of 70 percent. The heat would reach into the upper 90s, with the sun blazing down the entire field to add another obstacle for all 1,796 who began the race.

The swim leg started for Wellington as expected, keeping up with the lead swimmers and remaining consistent and strong in the Tracer Sayonara. She did not expend unnecessary energy and demonstrated it was going to be a good day from the start, splitting her fastest swim split by over two minutes in 54:31 and finishing 8th out of the water on the women’s pro field.

The 112-mile bike in the extreme heat of the day was pounding on all of the athletes, but Wellington could not be slowed down. As commentators followed her bike, the theme of their conversations on her was always pure dominance.

Through mile 40 of the race, Wellington was only 11 minutes behind the men’s leader. She tore up the entire bike leg, using the Kawaihae portion of the bike to further her distance on the women’s field and still trail not too far behind the men. She climbed the hills sitting on her aero bars, taking control, with the winds picking up as she closed into town. Flying towards the T2, she split an astounding 4:52:07. This year’s split crushed last years, where she clocked 5:08:15. Into T2, she was 11:06 ahead of the next women.

Wellington entered the marathon portion of the Ironman continuing to run away from the field. There were no clouds to cover the sun beating down on the athletes, but that would not stop Wellington from closing on the finish line in fiery speed. She got into a rhythm quickly with a smooth tempo. Key to the marathon was her ability to get fluid and nutrition in the entire leg.

Early in mile five, Wellington had a 13:27 lead on the next girl, and at 10.3 miles in she was 17:37 ahead of Virginia Verasategui at 6:58:18. Running down the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway, it was clear she owned the race.

Closing in on the second half of the run to complete the race, it became obvious that Wellington was now racing the clock, not the competitors. She was checking her watch, and gunning for the course world record. In the last two miles running down Ali’i Drive, the cheers and support of the crowd fueled her as she came through the home stretch-smiling from ear-to-ear. To take the record along with the championships, she would need to hold a seven minute mile pace in the end.

She did just that, finishing in true championship form with a marathon split of 3:03:06. Wellington crossed the finish line with tears, arms held up high, and a British flag in hand. She captured her third consecutive Ironman World Championship title, finishing in 8:54:03, to rewrite the record that stood for 17 years.

Wellington remains undefeated in the Ironman distance races, and the Ironman World Championships, and an inspiration to all those who follow her accomplishments. TYR congratulations both her and the rest of the TYR sponsored athletes for their outstanding performances at the 2009 Ironman World Championships.

In another triathlon-filled weekend in the U.S., TYR’s Becky Lavelle rounded out the podium with a third place finish at Sunday, August 30th’s Life Time Fitness Chicago triathlon, while John Flanagan set a new swim course record at the Ford Ironman Lousiville triathlon in the Tracer Sayonara the same day.

Lavelle entered the Chicago race after winning the event the prior year. In the sprint distance, she kept close with competitors Sarah Haskins and Sarah Groff of Colorado Springs, CO, splitting 21:08 in the swim, 1:01:36 in the bike, and a closing 39:12 run split. Despite the strong bike leg that held off Groff and
left her trailing closely behind Haskin, she was unable to repeat the victory-closing her race behind the two in 2:02:45.

With her performance, Lavelle remains in first place in the 2009 Life Time Fitness triathlon series, with 25,000 points- 1,000 ahead of Rebeccah Wassner, and 5,000 over Sarah Haskins. She will compete in the last two stops on the tour- Los Angeles and Dallas- for her chance at the $20,000 bonus purse.

TYR-sponsored Andy Potts of Colorado Springs, CO also toed the starting line in Chicago after coming off a prominent win at Ironman 70.3 Timberman the week prior. Emerging out of the water in the Tracer Sayonara first, he mounted his bike and was battling with close competitor Matt Reed. Speeding along on the bike leg down Lakeshore Drive, he collided with an age-group competitor and was ousted off his bike. Rushed to the hospital, he reportedly suffered extensive abrasions but is said to be ok.

Further south, Hawaii’s Flanagan had a stellar swim split in Lousiville, emerging from the water in the Sayanora with a new swim course record of 44:54. Displaying his ability to race amongst the sport’s top contenders, he remained consistent throughout the race to finish sixth.

Continuing through the heavy schedule of triathlons this summer, TYR-sponsored triathletes are dominating at all course lengths, continuing to establish a name for themselves on the international field. This past Saturday, July 11th, and Sunday, July 12th, proved to be no exception as Chrissie Wellington broke the women’s Ironman-distance world record, Andy Potts and Becky Lavelle placed in the top three at the Life Time Fitness race in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Desiree Flicker finished second at the Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island Ironman.

The weekend kicked off with Pott’s performance on Saturday when he placed second at the LifeTime Fitness Ironman. Coming out strong from the swim portion of the race in a Tracer Sayonara suit, Potts battled back from his sixth place position after the bike portion to have the fastest run split of the entire field (31:25.1) and cross the finish line second in a final time of 1:49:15.5.

Consistency throughout the entire race proved to be instrumental to Lavelle’s third place finish at the race. She was third out of the water with a split of 19:28.7, as well as third on the bike (1:02.29.6). With the fastest T2 split in the pro female category, she persevered through the run to finish at 2:02:39.3. She was out-raced by Sarah Haskins and Julie Bibens.

Undefeated Ironman competitor Wellington was the talk of the triathlon world Sunday, July 12th when she demolished the women’s Ironman-distance world record by over 13 minutes.

Using the momentum from her record-breaking performance at the Kansas 70.3 Ironman, Wellington was not able to be touched during the 112 mile bike distance, where she split an astounding 4:40:28 hours. Never letting go of her lead, she would run through the finish line at 8:31.59 hours.

Also finishing on a high note Sunday was USA’s Desiree Ficker, who competed at the Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island Triathlon. Racing against over 1,300 athletes from more than 15 countries, she clocked the fastest run in the pro women division in 1:25:57 for the 13.1-mile race. Despite the effort, she was unable to catch Michellie Jones and finished second in 4:27:21.

With the conclusion of the 2009 USA Swimming ConocoPhillips National Championships and World Championship Trials, TYR congratulates Mary DeScenza, Matt Grevers, and Amanda Weir for their strong performances throughout the past week claiming individual and relay spots on the US World Championship team headed to Rome, Italy for the championships scheduled to begin July 22nd.

Competing from July 7th to July 11th, the three sponsored athletes had tremendous success from the start and as a result will race in a total 10 combined events at the championships.

Three-time 2008 Olympic medalist Grevers will represent the US in the men’s 100m backstroke, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 400m medley relay, and 400m freestyle relay. At the national championships, he had two personal best times, most notably in the 100m freestyle. Wearing the new TYR Tracer Sayonara, Grevers came out of lane eight in the finals to secure a spot on the 400m freestyle relay team by touching the wall in 48.27, capturing fourth.

Coming off of an impressive year of swimming that included being named the 2008-2009 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series winner, DeScenza added yet another achievement, qualifying to compete in the stars and stripes in Rome swimming the women’s 200m butterfly. Wearing the TYR Tracer Rise, she went a lifetime best by using her signature back-end speed to come from behind to clinch a second place finish in 2:07.13.

“I am so excited I am going to Rome,” DeScenza exclaimed. “It has been a really hard week and I am happy I was able to come out on top!”

Weir is no stranger to competing for the U.S. at the World Championships. The two-time Olympic medalist made her first appearance on the World Championship team in 2005 when she took away two medals as a relay member. At the 2007 World Championships, she earned three medals with team USA, setting an American record as a member of the 400m freestyle relay team.

At this past week’s national championships, Weir wore the new Tracer A7 and had stand-out results. With a lifetime best time by dipping below the 25 second barrier in the 50m freestyle, she secured her first individual spot on the championship team. In the 100m freestyle, she came from behind on the back half and claimed second-adding another event to her meet line-up. In total, she will represent the US in the women’s 50m and 100m freestyle as well as the 400m freestyle relay and 400m individual medley relay.

“I have never done that much swimming at worlds before so it should be fun,” she said. “I’m really excited for a chance to prove myself again and get back up there on top.”

In addition to the three athletes representing TYR at the championships, swim coaches Bill Rose of the Mission Viejo Nadadores, Sean Hutchison of King Aquatics club, and diving coach Jeff Huber of Indiana University will guide team USA as members of the coaching staff.

Hutchison will bring extensive experience on the coaching level after most recently serving as assistant women’s coach for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team in Rome. His trip to Rome will be his second time serving on the World Championship coaching staff, after previously being named assistant coach of the 2007 team.

Not new to coaching at international competitions, Rose has been a USA coach for multiple World University Games, Pan American Games, and USA Open Water teams. He successfully placed two athletes on this year’s world championship team.

“I feel absolutely great about being asked to coach for the USA, “said Rose. “The whole key is any time I can be there representing the United States and taking in that kind of atmosphere there is nothing better. That’s the gold medal coaches get. We don’t get anything else. We get that and I win.”

Having placed one of his divers on every Olympic team since 1992, Huber is recognized globally for his coaching talent. He has been the USA diving coach for the past three Olympic Games, and will use his expertise to guide the US championship team against the world’s best divers. One of his own Indiana University divers will compete for the team in Rome.

Be sure to check back to TYR.com throughout the entire 2009 World Championships to follow Grever’s, DeScenza’s, and Weir’s performances as they go for gold in Rome.

The 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and World Championship Team Trials in Indianapolis, IN kept getting better for TYR swimmers and coaches each night, ending Saturday evening on a high note. Amanda Weir added yet another individual race to her list for the championships in Rome, Italy, while coach Bill Rose of the Mission Viejo Nadadores was selected by USA Swimming to join the team’s coaching staff.

In the finals of the women’s 100m freestyle, Weir was introduced to the crowded stands as the championship record holder in the event. When the start went off, Weir was out to prove she was still one of the fastest females in the event.

Flipping at the 50m mark,Weir was sixth splitting a 26.27. Despite the deficit, she came from behind to have the fastest back-end leg (27.76) to touch second in 54.03.

Weir recognized the lack of speed against the competitive field in the first half of the race, and will look to show her true talent in Rome.

“I know I can do a lot better in there in the hundred,” Weir shared. “I was a bit rocky tonight, and I definitely think I have a lot of room for improvement which is a good thing.”

With the completion of tonight’s race, Weir will compete in the 50m and 100m freestyle as well as the 400m freestyle relay and 400m medley relay at the championships.

“I have never done that much swimming at worlds before so it should be fun,” she said ”I am really excited for a chance to prove myself again and get back up there on top.”

The other highlight of the evening was the announcement of adding TYR’s coach Rose to the 2009 U.S. World Championship coaching staff. Not new to coaching at international competitions, he has been a USA coach for multiple World University Games, Pan American Games, and USA Open Water teams.

“I feel absolutely great about being asked to coach for the USA, “said Rose. “The whole key is any time I can be there representing the United States and taking in that kind of atmosphere there is nothing better. That’s the gold medal coaches get. We don’t get anything else. We get that and I win.”

Earlier in the day during the preliminaries, TYR’s Matt Grevers had a personal best time in the men’s 200m backstroke wearing the new Tracer Sayonara. Dropping over two seconds and touching in at 1:57.04, he opted to scratch for the finals of the race.

The 2009 Life Time Fitness Triathlon kicked off in full gear on Saturday, July 11th as over 3,000 triathletes of all levels arrived on the starting line in Minneapolis, MN. Among those athletes were TYR-sponsored Andy Potts and Becky Lavelle, who each finished in the top three of the competitive professional field.

The no wetsuit swim and no-drafting format race set the stage for Pott’s to prove his competitiveness against the internationally-represented field.

In the swim portion, Australian Clayton Fettel and Potts finished 1-2, each wearing TYR’s new Tracer Sayonara. Jumping on the bike, Potts fell behind, having the sixth fastest split (57:45.9). In that time, Boulder, CO’s Matt Reed was able to claim the first place position heading into the run.

Although pre-race predictions questioned Pott’s ability to out-run his competitors, he championed from behind to have the fastest split of the last leg of the race in 31:25.1. He would cross the finish second overall to Reed with a final time of 1:49:15.5.

On the women’s side, Lavelle entered the race as the hometown favorite after having grown up in Minneapolis.

Consistency throughout the entire race proved to be instrumental to Lavelle’s third place finish. She was third out of the water with a split of 19:28.7, as well as third on the bike (1:02.29.6). With the fastest T2 split in the pro female category, she persevered through the run to finish at 2:02:39.3. She was out-raced by Sarah Haskins and Julie Bibens.

Both Potts and Lavelle will race next at the Life Time Fitness Triathlon in New York City scheduled for July 26th. Check back into TYR.com for a race recap on their performance, as well as all of TYR’s sponsored triathletes.
