TYR athlete Fran Crippen won his seventh national title on Friday, June 4th at the 2010 Open Water National Championships held in Long Beach, Calif. Finishing the 10K in 1:57:14.72, Crippen garnered the top qualifying position on USA Swimming’s roster for both the 2010 Open Water World and Pan Pacific Championships. Crippen wore TYR’s new Tracer Technology.

The race remained tight from the 4K mark until the finish, with the first six positions separated by less than a half-second. A 2009 World Championship bronze medalist in the event, Crippen relied on experience and back-end speed to pull ahead at the end and to win.

Crippen will represent the U.S. at the 2010 Open Water World Championships in Roberval, Quebec from July 17th-22nd. After winning the Pan Pacific Championship in 2007, Crippen will aim to regain the 10K title at this year’s Pan Pacific competition in Irvine Calif. on August 22nd.

Entering the 2010 competitive swim season, TYR is thrilled to announce the beginning of a multi-year sponsorship with Atlanta, Ga.-based Swim Atlanta and Head Coach Chris Davis. Currently sponsoring the programs stand out, Olympic Medalist and American Record Holder Amanda Weir, the company looks forward to fostering the largest team in the country as it builds on 33 years of experience.

“Swim Atlanta has never been just about quantity,” said TYR’s Promtions Director Matt Zimmer. “Five Olympians produced under Chris Davis’ program speaks volumes to the type of coach and the type of program we are proud to partner with.”

Since the co-founding of Swim Atlanta in 1977, Davis has engineered the team from one location and 25 swimmers to seven locations and over 2,000 swimmers. In its tenure, the team has won 12 Junior National Championships and one U.S. National Club Championship. During that time, Davis has personally coached three of the five Olympians who have come through the Swim Atlanta program, including Weir.

“I have watched TYR from a distance the past few years and observed their relationship with not only their professional athlete but their sponsored teams both college and club,” Davis shared. “I have been extremely impressed on all fronts. Our entire coaching staff is excited about Swim Atlanta’s future with such an outstanding company as TYR.”

In addition to a continued dedication to redefining the next generation of performance swimwear and accessories, TYR is passionate about supporting swim programs, individual athletes, and coaches worldwide.

Leveaux represented TYR-sponsoredFrance as he stepped on the block in lane three for the much anticipated sprint event. A silver medalist in the event at the 2008 Olympics, he found himself with a field of equally as talented sprinters including the current world record holder.

The quick dash across the length of the pool was up in the air from the dive, and Leveaux was able to claim a medal by touching the wall third in a lifetime best time of 21.25. The time was two tenths of a second faster than his performance in Beijing. France also claimed the silver place position, and a Brazil swimmer secured the win.

In the women’s semi-final heat of the 50m freestyle, weir swam in the second heat and placed third. With a time of 24.31, she enters Sunday’s final fourth overall.

The TYR-sponsored Danish federation celebrated as their swimmer captured the women’s 800m freestyle, beating out the home-crowd’s Italian swimmer for the gold.

Return back to TYR.com tomorrow for the conclusion of the 2009 World Championships as Weir looks to add a medal to her list of lofty accomplishments this year.

The women’s 100m freestyle was the first event to take place on day five at the competition in Rome, Italy, as fans entered the Foro Italico to continue watching the excitement that the swimming competition has produced.

Weir dove in heat sixteen of seventeen with former Olympians pushing alongside her. At the 50m wall, she flipped behind the field. Exploding off the walls, she surged ahead and owned the back-half of the race, splitting the fastest second half of the entire morning (26.95).

With the finish, Weir dropped three tenths from her previous best time, and enters tonight’s semi-final race as the top seed.

“I am pretty excited,” Weir said. “The race just felt really good and I still felt like I had six gears left so let’s see what I go tonight.”

The evening’s race promises to be a match against some of the world’s fastest women in the sport, with the former and current World Record holders both in the running to make the final heat, scheduled to compete Friday, July 31.

With a competitive field that includes Olympic medalists and the former world record holder, Mary DeScenza entered the morning’s race with her work ahead of her.

Seated with her previous best time of 2:07.13, DeScenza dove in and immediately showed promises of a strong morning swim.

Hitting the 100m mark over a second above world record pace (1:00.57), it was her signature back-end speed that allowed her to dominate her competitors. The last 50m split of 31.65 was over two seconds ahead of nearly every other swimmer in the field, allowing her to claim her first world record.

With the three-second drop from her previous best, DeScenza sits a comfortable 1.36 seconds below the second place finisher.

Continue to follow DeScenza’s road to victory and the rest of TYR-sponsored athletes as they compete against the world’s best in Rome at TYR.com

TYR Sport, Inc. is pleased to announce the signing of University of Texas women’s head coach Kim Brackin to a multi-year partnership through 2012. With years of coaching experience at the collegiate, national, and international level, as well as extensive expertise in technique analysis, Brackin promises to add widespread value to the TYR community.

Brackin has served as head coach of TYR-sponsored University of Texas’ women’s program since 2006. The program’s accomplishments under her leadership include a fifth place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championships, a 2009 Big 12 Championship title, and the development of numerous All-Americans and Big-12 conference champions. She came to Texas after an eight year stint at Auburn University (1997-2005), serving as co-head coach of the women’s team in her last three years. During her tenure, the program captured seven NCAA Championship titles, and Brackin was named the 2002 NCAA Women’s Swimming Co-Head Coach of the Year and the 2003 SEC Swimming Co-Head Coach of the Year.

“TYR has worked with Kim before, when she was at Auburn helping that team win multiple NCAA championships, so when she took over such an historic program like the Longhorns, there was no hesitation on our part to want to work together again” said Promotions Director Matt Zimmer. “Kim has always been a part of the TYR family, and we couldn’t be happier to be a partner with her again. We know there are more championship rings in her future.”

Brackin is also known for her extensive background on the international level. Acting as head coach of the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games for Zimbabwe, she guided former Auburn stand-out Kirsty Coventry to the South African country’s first Olympic medal in swimming. Coventry captured a combined seven medals in the Olympic games, including two gold medals, while breaking two world records in the process. Brackin was also on the Panama coaching staff for the 2003 World Championships, as well as the USA coaching staff at the 2003 World University Games, and the 2002 US National Junior Team.

“I am thrilled to rejoin the TYR family, this time as a Texas Longhorn,” said coach Brackin. “I am confident that the Texas women’s swimming team will exemplify what TYR strives for daily, which is excellence in the competitive arena. Beyond the innovative approach TYR takes to designing high-performance suits, it was its commitment to athletes and coaches to help us win championships that brought me back to TYR.”

Invested in supporting excellence in all facets of competitive swimming, TYR also sponsors Sean Hutchison, currently the head of KING Aquatics and the 2009 USA World Championship Team Head Coach, coach Bill Rose of Mission Viejo-a 2008 USA Olympic Games coach, head diving coach for Indiana University and 2009 World Championship Team head Jeff Huber, and French Swimming Federation coach Lionel Horter.

The 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and World Championship Team Trials in Indianapolis, IN kept getting better for TYR swimmers and coaches each night, ending Saturday evening on a high note. Amanda Weir added yet another individual race to her list for the championships in Rome, Italy, while coach Bill Rose of the Mission Viejo Nadadores was selected by USA Swimming to join the team’s coaching staff.

In the finals of the women’s 100m freestyle, Weir was introduced to the crowded stands as the championship record holder in the event. When the start went off, Weir was out to prove she was still one of the fastest females in the event.

Flipping at the 50m mark,Weir was sixth splitting a 26.27. Despite the deficit, she came from behind to have the fastest back-end leg (27.76) to touch second in 54.03.

Weir recognized the lack of speed against the competitive field in the first half of the race, and will look to show her true talent in Rome.

“I know I can do a lot better in there in the hundred,” Weir shared. “I was a bit rocky tonight, and I definitely think I have a lot of room for improvement which is a good thing.”

With the completion of tonight’s race, Weir will compete in the 50m and 100m freestyle as well as the 400m freestyle relay and 400m medley relay at the championships.

“I have never done that much swimming at worlds before so it should be fun,” she said ”I am really excited for a chance to prove myself again and get back up there on top.”

The other highlight of the evening was the announcement of adding TYR’s coach Rose to the 2009 U.S. World Championship coaching staff. Not new to coaching at international competitions, he has been a USA coach for multiple World University Games, Pan American Games, and USA Open Water teams.

“I feel absolutely great about being asked to coach for the USA, “said Rose. “The whole key is any time I can be there representing the United States and taking in that kind of atmosphere there is nothing better. That’s the gold medal coaches get. We don’t get anything else. We get that and I win.”

Earlier in the day during the preliminaries, TYR’s Matt Grevers had a personal best time in the men’s 200m backstroke wearing the new Tracer Sayonara. Dropping over two seconds and touching in at 1:57.04, he opted to scratch for the finals of the race. Already scheduled to swim the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 400m freestyle relay, and 400m medley relay, Grevers felt there were already enough events to focus on in Rome.

With the conclusion of the national championships, both TYR swimmers and coaches will continue to prepare for competition at the world championships beginning on July 22nd. Make sure to visit TYR.com for all up-to-date recaps on their performances.

The IUPUI pool in Indianapolis, IN set the stage Friday evening for TYR swimmers to shine at the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and World Championship Trials. Matt Grevers and Mary DeScenza both qualified for the U.S. team to compete at the championships in Rome, Italy beginning on July 22nd. TYR’s coach Kim Brackin of University of Texas also placed a swimmer on the roster, adding to the night’s overall success.

In the final of the men’s 100m freestyle, Grevers arrived from the ready room dressed in TYR’s
new Tracer Sayonara™. After placing eighth in the preliminaries in a 49.01, he stepped on the blocks of lane eight ready to be the heat’s outside smoke. Going out in a blazing 22.89-the fastest in the field- he did just that.

“I knew I had to race with nothing to lose. So I did, “said Grevers. “I went out fast trying on the new Sayonara and it worked out great. I felt so much better tonight in the water.”

Grevers held on the second fifty to place fourth overall, touching in a lifetime best 48.27. The time positioned him on the men’s 400m freestyle relay in Rome, Italy at the World Championships- the same event he is a 2008 Olympic gold medalist in.

“I wanted that so bad tonight,” Grevers said of making the relay team. “Being a part of the relay team in Beijing was incredible and I knew I wanted to be a part of that again. This is awesome.”

Immediately following Grever’s performance, DeScenza entered the final heat of the women’s 200m butterfly seated third. Already dropping half a second three nights before in the 100m butterfly (57.77) where she placed fourth, it would take another personal best to make the team.

DeScenza entered the turn at the 150m in third place, and used her back end speed to close in on the competition, splitting 33.21 on the last 50m. The effort resulted in the fastest time of DeScenza’s career- 2:07.13. Touching second, she reached her goal of making the U.S. roster for the championships.

“I am so excited I am going to Rome,” DeScenza exclaimed. “I just wanted to swim my own race and not worry about what was going on around me. It has been a really hard week and I am happy I was able to come out on top!”

Also excited and relieved after the race was University of Texas’ head womens coach Brackin, who watched as her swimmer finished first, also securing a spot on the World Championship team roster.

“It felt great to watch her make the team,” Brackin said. “She deserves to be in Rome. She works hard and is a talented kid. Right now I feel excitement, relief, and pride for her.”

With only one more day left at the championships, sign on to TYR.com to share in the enthusiasm of TYR’s swimmers and coaches as they look to add more swims to their trip in Rome.
