is this for the swim portion too? it's my first sprint tri!

This is more of an exercise shirt or sprint/running shirt. The swim is usually the first leg of a triathlon. For this phase, a wetsuit, cap and goggles will make your swim a lot more enjoyable and efficient. If you are a minimalist or if the water temperature is above 84°F (the governing body, USA Triathlon or USAT, doesn't allow wetsuits over 84°F), your only necessity is a swimsuit. Good luck on your first Tri! - Team TYR
So, it sounds like this isn't good for lap swimming? Aside from the pocket is the material up for it (chlorine?)

The tankini will withstand chlorine as good as any traditional lycra swim suit, but ideally you would want to swim in Durafast or Durafast Elite if you are worried about the longevity of your suit in chlorinated conditions. Lycra will break down faster over time.
