In a recent article titled “Pushing Past the Pain of Exertion,”
The New York Times took a look at how athletes use psychology to overcome pain during long distance races. The nation’s third largest newspaper spoke with three-time Ironman world champion Chrissie Wellington about how she endures a grueling nine hour Ironman race.
“I push my body to the limits in training. I know I can push my limits, those thresholds, push beyond them and come out the other side. Expect it will be painful and have faith in yourself that you will overcome those dark times. It’s easier to smile than grimace when you’re hurting,” said world record holder Wellington.
Reaching more than one million readers daily,
The Times accompanied the feature with a photo of Wellington on her way to yet another Ironman championship.
