Huntington Beach, CA – December 8, 2010 – Olympian Matt Grevers had a standout performance in Columbus, Ohio at the AT&T Short Course National Championships, winning three gold medals in the 100y freestyle, 100y backstroke, and the 100y butterfly. In addition to his three titles, Grevers set national meet records in all three events.
Grevers’ first gold medal performance came in the 100y fly. His national meet record time of 45.07 was just fast enough to outstretch second place finisher Tom Shields (45.33) right at the wall.
His success continued in the 100y backstroke finals. With an aggressive start off the blocks, Grevers was able to clinch his second gold medal in dominating fashion by defeating several U.S. National Team Members. Grevers’ time of 44.82 surpassed fellow TYR athlete Nick Thoman, who claimed the bronze with a time of 46.34. It is interesting to note that Grevers’ time was not far off the American record of 44.60, set in 2006.
With two gold medals already secured, Grevers resumed competition the next day in the 100y freestyle finals. In a blistering time of 41.35, Grevers was able to eclipse second place finisher Nathan Adrian by 28-hundreths of a second to give him his third and final gold medal.
TYR’s Nick Thoman was also part of the gold and silver medal winning relay teams in the 200y medley and 400y medley, respectively, bringing his total medal count to three. Thoman is having an impressive year, as he won the Bronze Medal in the 50m backstroke at the Pan Pacific Championships earlier this summer.
In the 50y freestyle, TYR athlete William Copeland swam an excellent race. With a time of 19.21, Copeland was able to edge Matt Grevers to claim the silver medal. Grevers took the bronze with a time of 19.30.
