Grevers, Kukors Take Home 2009 Golden Goggle Awards

On a night dedicated to honoring the high achievements of USA Swimming’s top swimmer and coaches, TYR-sponsored athletes Matt Grevers and Ariana Kukors received top honors. The 2009 Golden Goggle Awards, held Sunday, November 22nd in Beverly Hills, CA, celebrated the success of Team USA over the past year in national and international competition, where both athletes excelled. His second year as a Golden Goggle hopeful, Grevers walked away with his first award in the “Relay of the Year” category. Grevers and his teammates from the 4x100m Freestyle Relay at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Italy, won the award after breaking a championship record to win the gold medal over USA-rival France. Grever’s 47.61 split was instrumental in the relay’s win, passing the French relay to leave USA’s anchor in perfect position to secure the win. Kukors, who recently made the move to Fullerton, CA to train with longtime coach Sean Hutchison, earned the “Swim of the Year” award after her world record performance in the 200 Individual Medley at the championships this summer. Smashing the previous record by 1.5 seconds in a blazing 2:06.15, she topped an Olympian champion and solidified her name amongst the world’s fastest females in the sport. TYR congratulates Kukors and Grevers, as well as Golden Goggle nominees Fran Crippen, Amanda Weir, and coach Hutchison for their nominations and continued success and influence in the sport of swimming.
