4 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Meet Records at 2008 U.S. National Championship

Amanda Weir recorded a winning performance in the 50y freestyle in a time of 21.82, a winning margin of .45 seconds. In the preliminaries, Weir clocked her personal best time of 21.62, just shy of the American Record. She wore the advanced technology Tracer Rise full body for her sub 22-second performances in the 50y freestyle and relay events. DescenzaTop achievements continued as Mary DeScenza set a new meet record in the 500y freestyle. Recording a time of 4:35.63, she improved the former National record by four seconds (which she herself held). DeScenza eclipsed her lifetime personal best time while earning the National title in the 500y freestyle. From the outside lane 8, Matt Grevers led the field in the 50y freestyle crushing the meet record with a new time of 18.95. His top podium performance garnered him a lifetime personal best time and is currently the third fastest American in history. William Copeland earned a silver medal in the sprint race with his own lifetime personal best time. Wearing Tracer Rise, these swimmers took the 1-2 spots in the 50y freestyle. Matt Grevers Furthermore, the Men’s 4x100y medley relay laid claim to the National title and a new meet record. Grevers, Ritter, and Jeff Dash contributed to the record-setting performance with a relay time of 3:07.03. A silver medal was awarded to Eric Shanteau in the 200y IM in his first competition since the 2008 Olympic Games and cancer surgery. Setting a time of 1:42.59, Shanteau bettered his previous personal best time of 1:43.91. His performance demonstrates his recent recognition as the Golden Goggles Perseverance Award recipient.
