Two National Titles Captured by Margalis, Grevers

The action came out of lane three on the second night of the 2009 Short Course National Championships. Robert Margalis and Matt Grevers each added a new championship title to their list of accomplishments on Friday, December 4 at the Weyerhaueser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.,-each wearing TYR’s Tracer Light™ Jammer. Margalis, who recently switched club teams to swim with coach Sean Hutchison at FAST, entered the finals of the 400y individual medley seated third with a time of 3:48.39. Immediately swimming up with the race leaders in lane three, it was his breaststroke leg that propelled him into a position to take the title. With the fastest split of 1:04.24, he used his lead to win in 3:45.24. “I would have liked to go a lot faster, but it was a good swim,” Margalis shared after the race. “I do feel strong, and know that it is hard to change teams a month before a big meet. It is as good as I can expect!” Preparing to represent Team USA at the Dual in the Pool on December 18 and 19 in Manchester, England, Grevers made a last minute decision to swim at the championships. The trip proved to be worth it. Diving off the blocks of lane three in the finals of the 100y butterfly, Grevers exploded out of his first streamline and never let up. Splitting a blazing 21.05 at the fifty, the competitors could only try to catch up. He finished in 46:28 to earn his first-place finish. “I am a confident racer,” Grevers explained on his strong performance. “I was just looking to have fun-I wasn’t thinking about my time or my place. I just got in and raced and had a good swim.” With the conclusion of the finals, athletes will prepare for one more day at the championships, scheduled to conclude Saturday, December 5th.
