Huntington Beach, CA – Dec. 19, 2013 – TYR athletes love to shine under pressure, which was clearly illustrated this month at the 2013 AT&T Winter National Championships held at the University of Tennessee. Power duo Nick Thoman and Matt Grevers shattered American records, proving that even though they each have Olympic gold medals, they are far from resting on their laurels.
Nick Thoman pulled out a hat trick when he broke not one, not two, but three American records, all in one day. One record was achieved as part of the SwimMAC Carolina Men’s Relay Team, which broke the American record in the 4x50y medley relay by a time of .15.
Thoman’s two other unparalleled, record-breaking performances were solo, namely the 50y and 100y backstroke. The 100 yard backstroke was arguably the most nail-biting event of the championships, as heavy hitters Thoman and Grevers squared off against each other for the top spot. Largely thanks to an incredible 22.47 back-half split, Thoman finished in front.
Despite finishing second to Thoman, Grevers also beasted in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 44.49 and surpassing the previous American record of 44.55, which was set by none other than Grevers himself. Additionally, he won the men’s national title in the 100 yard butterfly with a stellar time of 44.94.
The superstar athletes are well-positioned to make a splash in the new year.
